San Marino is a microstate with a population of just 33,000. It is the third smallest country in Europe, with only Monaco and Vatican City being smaller. But don’t let its size fool you—San Marino is also the oldest republic in the world, with a history dating back to 301 AD.
Completely surrounded by Italy, San Marino is perched high in the Apennine Mountains, offering sweeping views, medieval architecture, and a unique atmosphere you won’t find anywhere else. The easiest way to get to San Marino is by taking a bus from Rimini. The bus ride takes only 30 minutes and a one-way ticket costs around 5€.
The bus winds its way up the mountain, dropping you right at the entrance of San Marino’s historic center—a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From there, everything is walkable.
When I stepped off the bus, I was immediately surrounded by clouds—you’re so high up, it genuinely feels like you’re walking through the clouds. I visited in autumn, and the fall colors made the scenery even more magical. The views were breathtaking, and I couldn’t stop taking photos.
Here are 10 pictures that prove San Marino might just be the most beautiful hidden gem in Europe.
