While I was in Málaga, I got the idea to rent a car for a day and drive along Spain’s beautiful southern coast all the way to Gibraltar. I’d heard stories about long delays at the border due to traffic jams, as well as the streets being very narrow on the Gibraltar side, so I decided to avoid driving into Gibraltar altogether.
Instead, I parked on the Spanish side, in the town of La Línea de la Concepción. You can easily leave your car there and walk across the border. There’s even free parking available near the stadium, which makes things super convenient.
Have a look at the map below:

Once you’ve crossed the border on foot, you’ll find bus number 5, which takes you across the airport runway and into the city center. A one-way ticket costs around 2€. I was relieved I didn’t drive in—Gibraltar’s roads are incredibly narrow, and walking combined with public transport turned out to be a much better choice.
Get off at the last stop, and from there it’s just a short walk to the cable car, which takes you up to the iconic Rock of Gibraltar.

Visiting the Rock was without a doubt the highlight of my day. The views from the top are absolutely breathtaking—on a clear day, you can even see the coastline of Africa in the distance. A truly unforgettable experience!
